Just when we thought we had seen all the wonderful things that 3D printing can do, here comes a man-made leg that helps change the life of a little Canadian duckling called Dudley. He had been trying to walk after losing a leg when fighting with other chickens!
The story began on August 19th, 2013. The newly-born Dudley and his brother were placed inside a chicken shelter(鸡舍). In a few hours, a lot of chickens attacked the two, killing Dudley’s brother and leaving him, without a leg!
While Dudley could swim with his single leg, he had a hard time wadding on ground. Doug Nelson, the keeper of the shelter decided to ask Terence for help. Terence is the head of a company that offers 3D printing designs.
It was not easy to make a man-made leg for a duck. But as soon as he saw the brave little Dudley waddling around on one leg, Terence knew he had to do something. He began by watching videos about how their legs worked. He spent the next few weeks building a 3D template(模型). Once ready, he sent them to Ontario-based 3D engineering firm Proto3000, who agreed to print the leg.
With the help of the man-made leg, Dudley could walk like other ducks. He happily ran over to show it off to his best pal—a pet pig called Elsie.
